A Week of Tropical Entertainment

Each August, Colombia's second biggest city, Medellin, detonates in a blend of dynamic hues and tropical music, as it observes La Feria de las Flores - The Flower Festival. For one week an assortment of occasions happen, and this year my better half, girl and I went to the three most well known, beginning with the Cabalgata - a steed parade that snakes its way through the city roads on a Saturday evening.

The Cabalgata passes near our flat, so soon after two p.m. we advanced over the road to discover a space at the edge of the street. There were at that point many individuals there, some wearing the conventional Panama-style cap and poncho that are basic in this locale of Colombia.

A few people close us had a grill, and were cooking different cuts of meat and the frankfurters they eat here called Chorizos. The odor made me feel hungry despite the fact that I had recently eaten. There were road dealers passing, offering drinks, caps, confections, and even plastic capes on the off chance that it begun to rain.

It wasn't some time before the parade begun to pass. To begin with the Army passed by in full battle uniform with countenances painted, droning over the sound of joyful praise. They were trailed by buoys from different organizations supporting the occasion. A significant number of these had speakers impacting out Salsa music, urging individuals to move.

At that point the primary steeds begun to pass. There were steeds, and stallions, and much more steeds - obviously there were more than eight thousand in the parade. The possess an aroma similar to steeds blended with the odors floating from the grill and the sound of the music impacting from speakers strapped over a portion of the stallions backs to make a really Latin feeling. I saw a couple people riding bulls, and one man on a wild ox! The riders participating pay a charge to enter and the cash gathered goes to nearby foundations.

The next Saturday there was a parade of old and old fashioned autos. The parade begun at one o'clock. The sun was thrashing on our backs as we strolled the six squares to where the parade would pass. Fortunately we found a spot under a few trees which gave some shade. The autos were dated from the mid 1970's to the late 1920's. What makes this parade engaging is the autos, as well as that the tenants spruce up in the form comparing to the year the auto was made.

To begin with to pass was a choice of old fire motors, which was especially intriguing for me as my dad was in the fire benefit. There were numerous autos from North America, for example, Plymouths, Fords, Buicks, Chevrolets, Mustangs, Willys - the old Army jeeps, and some European autos, for example, Triumphs, BMW's and Mercedes. Every one of the autos had a sign over the windshield expressing the model and the year it was fabricated. The parade kept going admirably over a hour and was altogether delighted in by everybody.

The following day was the highlight of the Flower celebration, and the explanation behind its name - a blossom parade through the boulevards of the downtown area. The parade was because of begin at two p.m. We arrived 90 minutes prior, and found the avenues pressed, with individuals lining ten profound to see the scene. Luckily we had entry to the workplaces of a companion's dad, and subsequently had an astounding perspective from a third floor overhang.

The blooms are joined to Silletas, a seat like structure which is strapped to the backs of the Silleteros - the men, ladies and young people that convey the showcases. The blooms are developed in a range up in the mountains around twenty minutes from the city called Santa Helena. Initially the silletas, were utilized to transport the blooms to the city available to be purchased, however in 1957, a man called Arturo Uribe Arango proposed that the Silleteros parade their showcases through the downtown area, thus the Medellin blossom celebration was conceived.

The air in the avenues was electric even before the parade began, and the fervor developed in a crescendo as the main members passed. You can not envision the excellence of the showcases, and the measure of work that probably gone into their readiness. The Silleteros were sprinkled with gatherings of artists and melodic groups adding to the tropical feel of the occasion.

Medellin is in the office (State) of Antioquia, and here they have an adage - "When the Silleteros go past it is truly Antioquia that is passing." The Silleteros, and the general population of Medellin are pleased with their bloom celebration, and from what I saw they have each privilege to be so.
